Round Table Group

Bonnets

March 27, 2002

Weston, MA
Presenter: Carrie Midura

Summary:

Bonnets were the subject of our first round-table discussion and lots of information was presented over the course of the evening. Carrie gave a short talk on the information she had compiled from various sources, including, but not limited to, the following: 18cWoman files and email messages, contemporary artwork, runaway ads from VA, PA and MA newspapers & Kathleen Kannik of Kannik's Korner. Each person who attended the round-table received a lengthy handout with images, written descriptions and various bits of research. Terri, Rhonda & Carrie brought their bonnets to try on and additional brown paper bags were available for copying and designing patterns, although there was little time left after the discussion concluded! Since that first round-table in March 2002, the round table group has continued to meet on roughly a monthly basis to discuss the intricacies of the eighteenth century. Sue F. has even gone so far as to organize and oversee at least two bonnet workshops, with more planned for the future. Thanks to her and all the research we've been gathering, now more and more bonnets are being seen on New England reenactors! Thank you to everyone!
